With its pleasing décor and delightful staff La Fondue Restaurant in Elviria is a marvellous place to dine.
Fabrice, the owner, offers a wonderful menu from which to choose and there is surely something to suit all tastes.
After entering the main doors you are greeted and shown to your table by the lovely Maître, Rosie. She will look after all your needs during your evening. If by chance you have to wait there is a cosy bar area where you can have a quiet aperitif.
The dining area has room for around 70 people; additional seating is available in the high season. That is when they throw open the conservatory doors to an outside terrace.
There is a lovely atmosphere, which is enhanced by only the low voices and laughter of the clients and the discretion of the waiting staff. They do not have any of that intrusive background music, allowing you to actually hold a conversation without having to shout at each other across the table. If you do prefer a little music make your reservation for a Sunday, they make an exception at the end of the evening when they have a little gathering in the bar.
You will be spoilt for choice with their menu, a great selection of starters, mains and desserts and the food was extremely good the night we ate there.
We chose 2 different starters, a Cheese Raclette served piping hot with small gherkins, baby boiled potatoes and some delicious Bombay onions and the Pil Pil Prawns, both very good choices.
They only use best quality beef and it shows. Our Argentine entrecote steaks were excellent. Cooked over a charcoal grill they were both tasty and served exactly how we had ordered. They came with generous side portions of freshly cooked chips and great bowls of garnished salad.
There are some very appealing items on this menu, at the neighbouring table, two diners had the Chefs special home made burgers, they came with all the trimmings and were very appealing.
One of the dishes is presented in a very novel way, the Irish beef skewer. We are quite used to seeing them laid on the plate for you to struggle with as you try to slide the meat off. Here though, they are served vertically! The skewer’s ring hangs from a hook on a special stand…and the juicy steak portions just slide off.
As their name suggests their specialty dish is the Fondue. There is quite a lot of fun to be had in eating this dish. Whether you opt for the cheese version or the meat selection, half the enjoyment is dipping in of bread and vegetables or cooking your own meat in the boiling hot oil. I shall definitely try this out at my next visit.
Although I think my choice will be the rich and decadent dessert version, a fondue pot full of dark, melted Belgian chocolate and served with freshly cut seasonal fruits.
The offer vegetarian options too: a vegetarian pasta, cheese raclette and of course the cheese fondue make a great change from just being offered a plain omelette.
We drank a couple of glasses of the very acceptable house red – from the Finca Ucles, Cuenca, we really should have bought the bottle.
The wine list is varied, mostly Spanish in origin and there are some very good Riojas. It is a little pricey, but doesn’t vary much when compared to other establishments in the Elviria area.
For those special occasions they have a Laurent Perrier Rosé, Moet et Chandon Brut and even a humble Cava.
Finally we decided were too full for dessert, so ordered two Irish coffees. These were presented with complimentary pots of chocolate mousse and a crunchy biscuit, a very nice detail to end our lovely evening. I shall definitely be returning. I must try that chocolate fondue!
Average price for two people: 110€, but budget for more if you wish to choose one of those very nice Riojas.
